Brief description

The Patagonia Black Hole Duffel 40L is the most compact of the Black Hole duffel family: 40 liters capacity in a format that meets the carry-on restrictions of most airlines and trains. 900-denier ripstop with recycled TPU laminate, padded and removable backpack straps, reinforced base, and the ability to pack into its own pocket when not in use. It's the travel bag you take for a long weekend, a surf trip, or to the gym, knowing it will withstand whatever you throw at it.

Main features

  • 900-denier ripstop with recycled TPU laminate: the body is 14.1-oz post-consumer recycled polyester with post-industrial recycled TPU laminate and a matte finish. It is the most robust fabric in the Black Hole range: resistant to abrasion, scuffing, and weather.
  • Padded and removable backpack straps: when you need your hands free, you can wear it as a backpack. When you don't need them, they are completely removable so they don't get in the way.
  • Reinforced grab handles: ready for the hustle and bustle of airports, car trunks, and luggage carousels.
  • Wide top opening: the main zipper opens wide for easy loading and unloading of items. It can easily hold clothes for a long weekend.
  • Side zippered pocket accessible from inside and out: you can access it from the outside without opening the bag, or from the inside when it's open. When the bag is empty, the entire duffel folds into this pocket for compact storage.
  • Internal mesh pocket on the lid: for quick access to small items you need to locate quickly: documents, charger, toiletry bag.
  • Padded base: protects contents from bumps and uneven surfaces when you place the bag on the ground.
  • Reinforced external daisy chains: robust attachment points for lashing extra gear to the outside. Haul handles at the ends for linking multiple bags together.
  • bluesign® certified: the lining fabric is bluesign® approved.
  • Fair Trade Certified™: made in a factory where workers receive an additional premium for their labor.

Why choose this bag?

  • Carry-on size with an expedition soul: 40 liters that meets carry-on luggage requirements for most airlines and trains. No check-in, no waiting, no lost bag. But the 900-denier fabric with TPU laminate is so tough you could take it anywhere in the world without worrying.
  • The most compact in the family: it's the smallest duffel in the Black Hole range. If the 55, 70, or 100 liters of its larger siblings seem excessive, this is the perfect size for short trips, weekend getaways, or as a premium gym bag.
  • Folds away when not in use: you store it in its own pocket and put it in a drawer or another suitcase. It takes up a fraction of its unfolded size.
  • Backpack or duffel, you decide: the padded straps give you the option of carrying it on your back when walking long distances. And they are removable when you want a clean bag without dangling straps.
  • Seven colors to choose from: Aqua Stone, Birch White, Black w/Black, Noble Grey, Peach Sherbet, Smolder Blue w/Amanita Red, and Weathered Stone.
